THE WHALER'S FORGE weaves a tale about the survival and redemption of a Basque whaler abandoned on the eastern coast of North America in 1364.  This historical novel reflects the insights gained when Christine joined Dr. William Fitzhugh, Archaeological Curator of the Smithsonian Institution, to help excavate a recently discovered 16th-century Basque whaling site in northeastern Quebec. Their team explored an extremely remote bay from a 10-person research boat named the Pitsiulak. While searching for artifacts ashore, Christine uncovered what may be a forge used by early Basques, as well as small articles of cloth and iron. This incomparable hands-on experience added to the knowledge obtained during her prior research trip to Red Bay, Labrador.
